Poole's Diner, of Raleigh, North Carolina, is proud to sponsor STIR THE POT, a seasonal dinner and discussion benefitting the Southern Foodways Alliance's documentary film initiative. This four part series is hosted and organized by SFA member and Poole's Diner chef Ashley Christensen.

Next Up:
STIR THE POT with Alex Raij and Eder Montero, owners of New York's Txikito

The dinner and discussion will feature Alex Raij and Eder Montero, the wife and husband owners of New York’s Txikito, the city’s only Basque restaurant and El Quinto Pino, the city’s best tapas place.

Alex and Eder’s food is a gorgeous love letter to Spain. Their cooking is simple and excellent in both ingredients and technique. Travel and Leisure named Txikito (pronounced Chic Kee Toe) to their 50 Best Restaurants list for their perfectly crisp suckling pig and dynamic seasonal specials. Their burger “El Doble” was the game changer in the NYC burger wars (and is still winning).

El Quinto Pino was named Best Tapas Bar by New York magazine, and New York’s only true tapas bar’ by Peter Meehan of the New York Times. It has been suggested that the Uni Panini may be the most original thing to happen to the sandwich since the hot dog.

Dinner on Sunday, August 8th 6:30pm @ Poole’s Diner
A sparkling reception with pintxos (Spanish finger-foods)
A five-course dinner with wine pairings
$150++ per person

Industry Potluck, Monday, August 9th 6pm-9pm @ Ashley Christensen’s home
The Southern Foodways Alliance documents, studies, and celebrates the diverse food cultures of the changing American South. As a community, it is invaluable that we share our inspirations, ideas, issues, challenges, ingredients, and yes, even our politics. I first cooked with SFA three years ago. There is a bit of magic to the group that is difficult to describe. I left with many new friends and the certainty that I wanted to create SFA events in the Triangle to celebrate their mission and magic.

The potluck is for everyone--restaurant industry folks, writers, beverage enthusiasts, home cooks and people who with a general love for food and its history. For the potluck, we will provide a main course of black cherry smoked beer can-roasted chicken and wine to match. Our friends at Fullsteam Brewery (Durham) will be pouring El Toro Cream Ale, and the cocktail craftsmen of Foundation (Raleigh) will be stirring a signature cocktail. There will be music selections and stories from Alex and Eder, and a cameo appearance by Guest of Honor Maayan Montero, their beautiful 13 month old daughter.

Please bring a check for $35 to Southern Foodways Alliance and a dish to share that celebrates your sense of place, wherever that may be.

Special thanks to Brent Schilb of Inland Seafood for the lovely Springer Mountain (Georgia) chickens for this event.

Reservations are required and limited for both events. Please call Poole’s to reserve, at (919) 832-4477.
